City
Great Falls celebrated its 125 anniversary last year. The city was organized as a municipal corporation in 1888, but it was founded four years earlier by Minneapolis planner Paris Gibson.
Great Falls operates under a commission/manager form of government.
The City Commission consists of a mayor, elected to a two-year term, and four commissioners who serve overlapping four-year terms. The Commission sets policy, while day-to-day operations are handled by a city manager.
The nine city departments are:
- City manager's office.
- City Attorney.
- City Planning.
- Community Development.
- Fiscal Services.
- Fire/Rescue.
- Parks & Recreation.
- Police.
- Public Works.
Each department is headed by a director.
Municipal Court is under the direction of an independently elected City Judge who is not required to report to either the city manager or the commission.
